BBC presenter Susan Rae’s son has explained the moment that her colleagues at the channel realised something was wrong prior to her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

After 30 years at the BBC it was natural that that they would know her enough to realise something was awry.

Now her son, actor Rory Cargill, has revealed what happened, saying: “For her bosses, and herself, it was over why she could no longer work the faders at the BBC.”

He also acknowledged that he and his brother had noticed signs: “For me and my brother, it was over why she had uncharacteristically forgotten our birthdays.

“As for the GPs, their initial results didn’t pick up on Alzheimer’s, as is often the case with younger patients, and Radio 4 fans went to Twitter after she stopped reading the news and asked, ‘Where did Susan Rae go?’ he revealed in an interview with Radio Times

Our subsequent struggles to secure even the necessities for her have shown us up-close how truly broken the care system is in this country – and how self-sufficient those fighting health conditions have to be without the nest egg we’re presumed to have.

“Mum has been living independently in a retirement community apartment since June 2022, but her needs have recently grown and the cost that comes with that is unaffordable to our family.”

The brothers continued: “Shockingly, she is considered to be ineligible to receive any benefits that acknowledge her condition.

Someone who has brought nothing but light into the world deserves so much better.
