THE legendary Freddie Mercury is known for being one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music.

Sadly, the Queen front man passed away at his Kensington home, Garden Lodge, two months after his 45th birthday.

For more than 21 years, the final resting place of Freddie Mercury was unknown, as it had never been revealed.

But in 2013, fans discovered a plaque in a West London cemetery that is clearly a memorial to the musician.

The plaque is in place at Kensal Rise cemetery and is dedicated to Farrokh Bulsara, Mercury’s birth name.

He became Freddie Mercury after forming Queen in 1971.

The small plaque sits on a tall plinth among tributes to other individuals and reads: "In Loving Memory of Farrokh Bulsara. Pour Etre Toujours Pres De Toi Avec Tout Mon Amour".

This translates as "Always To Be Close To You With All My Love" and is signed off with a letter M.

The M is thought to stand for his former girlfriend Mary Austin.

It is believed that Freddie's ashes were given to her after his cremation, but she has never revealed what she did with them.

Freddie passed away on November 24, 1991, aged 45.

He died due to Aids-related complications, suffering from bronchial pneumonia while the disease had destroyed his immune system.

The day before he died, a statement was made on Freddie's behalf which confirmed he was ill.

It read: "Following enormous conjecture in the press, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS.

"I felt it correct to keep this information private in order to protect the privacy of those around me.

"However, the time has now come for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth, and I hope everyone will join with me, my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease."

Speaking to Times Magazine, his Queen bandmate Brian May said of his friend's illness: "The problem was actually his foot – and, tragically there was very little left of it."

Brian added: "Once, he showed it to us at dinner. And he said: 'Oh Brian, I'm sorry I've upset you by showing you that'. And I said, 'I'm not upset, Freddie, except to realise that you have to put up with so much terrible pain'."

He went on to reveal his sadness as Freddie passed away just months before a potentially life-saving "cocktail of drugs" was discovered.

Sadly, even with his wealth and resources, this was a time when antiretroviral drugs which could extend patients' lives were still out of reach in the medicinal world.

According to his partner Jim Hutton, Freddie Mercury was diagnosed with AIDS in late April 1987.

Queen then stopped touring after he received the diagnosis.

The band's last concert was at Knebworth on August 9, 1986.

Freddie Mercury's released a statement just one day before he died.

The statement said: "Following enormous conjecture in the press, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS.

"I felt it correct to keep this information private in order to protect the privacy of those around me.

"However, the time has now come for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth, and I hope everyone will join with me, my doctors and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease."

</picture>LOVES OF HIS LIFE
