Survivor: Joel Dommett welcomes the contestants

Survivor, the new Saturday night flagship show from the BBC has reportedly flopped in the ratings.

However, the BBC are reserving judgement and a show source told Express.co.uk: “In a world of on demand viewing, programmes are not judged on overnight performance alone and iPlayer figures are still to come.”

The first hugely hyped show, hosted by comedian Joel Dommett, aired last Saturday in the premium slot right after Strictly Come Dancing at 8.25pm.

However, viewers didn’t stay switched on for the reality programme with an average of just 2.6 million tuning in. This is around 2 million less viewers than watched Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel the previous week, when a student won an eye-watering £72,000.

On Sunday night David Attenborough’s Planet Earth III was moved from its 8pm slot in order to air the second episode of Survivor, but it only garnered 2.3 million viewers, which was less than a repeat of the Antiques Roadshow on BBC2.

The series originally aired in the UK in 2001 and 2002 on ITV, before being rebooted this year with new dad Joel, 38, at the helm.

Prior to the launch of the show he admitted that he was hopeful that the show would enjoy a long run.

“I’m aware of how much of a huge format it is around the world, it’s probably one of the biggest and to be trusted with it is a huge compliment.

“I think it’s really great, and hopefully long may it last, it feels like it’s a really good time for it.

“I feel like there’s a lot of shows that happened over the last 20 years that led us to this point and I feel like people are going to welcome it with open arms.
