A Chinese medicine expert has stunned people on the web after showing off a traditional ‘tea pet’ that is shaped like a young boy who pees out water when it’s at the perfect temperature for brewing your hot drink.

The Eastern Philosophy, an Asian-owned small business that specializes in herbal medicines, frequently shares educational videos about traditional Chinese health remedies on TikTok.

In one of her latest clips, the small business owner showed viewers how they can use a tea pet known as the ‘Pee Pee Boy’ to discover if their water is hot enough for making a brewed beverage.

She showed the device to her over 286,000 followers, many of whom were left jaw-dropped by the figurine that’s in the shape of a child with a ‘large head and small penis.’

‘Have you ever come across the incredible Chinese Pee Pee Boy? These are clay figurines that have been popular as tea pets for centuries,’ she said at the beginning of the video.

Then, she showed the tea pet squirting out a stream of water as she poured the hot liquid on it.

‘But unlike other tea pets, the Pee Pee Boy may actually be the world’s first thermometer.

‘This is because they only squirt out a stream of water when the temperature is hot enough for making tea.

‘Considering Galileo invented the thermometer in 1952, the Pee Pee Boy may have pre-dated that by over 900 years,’ she said.

To use the device, you should submerge it for ten minutes until it’s filled with room- temperature water.

Then, after boiling water, pour the hot water over the Pee Pee Boy’s head.

If it emits a long stream, this means the water is hot enough for the tea.

The Pee-Pee Boy is a tea pet made of Zisha clay with an impressive technology: they “pee” out a stream of water when the temperature of water poured above is hot enough for making tea. Likely dating back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), the Pee-Pee Boy is also surmised by researchers to be the world’s oldest thermometer, pre-dating Galileo’s thermoscope by several hundred years! When hot water is poured over pee-pee boy, the air inside expands, increasing pressure, which then forces the internal water out. The hotter the water poured over the head, the more expansion there is (and the farther pee-pee boy’s “pee” stream). To see these thermodynamics in action, pour boiling water over the Pee-Pee Boy, pour out the hot water, then fully submerge in cool water for at least 10 minutes (with some even suggesting an hour). Remove from water, stand the Pee-Pee Boy upright and pour boiling water on top of its head. A stream of water should emerge from the Pee-Pee Boy’s member. According to the site Atlas Obscura, ‘The hotter the poured water, the more expansion and the farther pee-pee boy’s stream.’
