A man has credited a free Apple feature for getting him speedy access to emergency services after his car flipped over in a remote area of Canada earlier this year.

Ryo Lu had been driving to Lake Abraham, Canada to take some pictures with a friend when disaster struck and they were left with their car trapped upside down in a snowbank.

Lu said: “The car just started drifting and then it went completely out of control — it flipped over on the snowbank next to the road and we were stuck there.”

The San Francisco-based 31-year-old soon remembered his iPhone was equipped with Apple’s Emergency SOS satellite service, which allowed him to contact the firefighting department to help them out.

Speaking to People he explained: “It was kind of cool because you start pointing the phone to the sky. And then it started to gather key information for the emergency responders.”

He said a passerby invited him and his friend to warm up in their car, where they still waited for two hours before emergency services finally arrived.

Lu added: “If we drove a little bit further ahead, I think there was a cliff… we could’ve been dead. This was a happy ending.”

He explained the Apple feature was very easy to use and allowed him to call for help even when his phone had absolutely no service.

He continued: “It’s designed in a way that is just super simple. It has really clear diagrams.

“You turn the phone and then it shows you where the satellite is, and then when it’s in a good spot, it turns green.
