WITH Christmas coming in a cost of living crisis this year, everyone is trying to save where they can.

But can you enjoy a tasty festive feast this year without breaking the bank?

We’ve tested some traditional Christmas treats to find out which supermarket own-brand foods are the best quality for the price.

The Sun bought, cooked and tasted packs of pigs in blankets from Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Lidl.

For each one, we gave it a score out of ten for taste and a score out of ten for value, based on the price per 100g.

Here’s how the pigs in blankets scored out of 20 overall:

We were disappointed to see Tesco is only offering frozen pigs in blankets in its standard range this year – especially considering they were the second most-expensive ones we tested, at 25p per pig in blanket.

They were also disappointing to eat, with an overwhelming salty taste and a soft, gluey texture.

These from Asda didn’t brown well when cooking, so didn’t look as appealing as the other pigs in blankets we tried.

Unfortunately, they weren’t that tasty either.

Although they seemed more meaty than the Tesco version, they tasted mainly of cheap sausage without much smoky bacon flavour coming through.

These were middle-of-the-range price wise, at 20p per pig in blanket.

There was lots of bacon on these Morrisons pigs in blankets, which crisped up nicely in the oven.

Costing 21p per pig in blanket, they didn’t have a strong sausage and it felt like there was a lot of salt from the bacon – but they had a decent texture.

Sainsbury's were the most expensive pigs in blankets we tried, working out at 27p per pig – but they were also one of the nicest.

The meat was a little too squishy in texture but they had a great herby, sausage taste.

Aldi’s pigs in blankets were joint cheapest, at just 17p per pig.

But frustratingly, they browned so quickly they almost burnt in the cooking time and then stuck hard to the pan.

They also let us down on taste. The sausage was very bland, while the bacon was overwhelmingly salty.

The back of the pack revealed these pigs in blankets contained some unusual ingredients, including bamboo fibre and caramelised sugar syrup – we’re not convinced these belong in our Christmas favourites.

Despite costing just 17p each – the joint cheapest we tried – these Lidl pigs in blankets had everything we were looking for in a festive food.

The sausages were nicely flavoured and tasty, and were wrapped in crispy smoky bacon.

We were really impressed with the flavour for the price, and that's why it was crowned the winner.

</picture>FESTIVE BREW
