Tony Hadley has revealed the touching – and surprising – reason why he’s never done any drugs.

The Spandau Ballet legend, now 63, was the frontman of the 80s pop group – which also consisted of Gary and Martin Kemp, John Keeble and Steve Norman.

The group split in 1990, before Tony returned in 2009 before leaving again for good in 2017.

But where other music legends have led a life of rock and roll during their big years, Tony insists he has never taken any drugs – adding he is ‘vibey enough’ without them.

And the reason why is a sweet one as Tony once promised his grandma he wouldn’t go near them – and he has kept to it throughout the years.

Tony says people always tell him he ‘must have’ done drugs – but insists he never has

He told The Mirror: ‘People say to me, “You must have taken a line of coke, you’ve been in the music business for years. But I’ve never done any drugs.

‘I promised my nan I’d never do drugs – and it was kind of like the mafia, my family.

‘I do love a beer and a glass of wine, but you know what, I don’t need to take any drugs. I’m vibey enough.’

These days Tony is busier than ever, with an album due out soon, a full diary of summer 2024 festival bookings plus a new swing show touring the country in March.

His final Spandau days were eight years ago and he has ruled out ever returning to the band.

He has spoken out about his experience dramatically quitting the group in 2017, insisting the other members created a situation which cemented his decision never to return.

Speaking to the Mail’s Weekend Magazine last month, Tony firmly ruled out a reunion: ‘That’s a no, it’s not going to happen. Not with me involved. Sorry. I’d want nothing to do with it.’

Speaking about his career, he added: ‘I’m never going to retire. I have another 20 years in me. I’m not good at golf, I hate gardening, I don’t collect stamps. I’m still like a kid in a sweet shop when it comes to making music.’

They embarked on a world tour and released a new album in 2009 before the royalties war was reignited, with Tony finally leaving in 2017.

Tony also competed on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2015.
