Coleen Rooney felt Rebekah Vardy friendship was 'fake' before Wagatha trial
Few legal battles have gripped the nation like that of Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy, affectionately dubbed ‘Wagatha Christie’.
The two high profile football WAGs went head to head after Coleen accused Rebekah’s account of being behind the leaked stories about her to the press.
In a moment of incredible sleuthing, the 37-year-old caught out her friend and revealed this discovery in a post which left the nation reeling.
A battle of WAGs ensued as Rebekah, 41, hit back at Coleen’s accusation with legal action and the Wagatha trial unravelled.
The two were assumed to be friends, following years of running in the same circles with their husbands playing as teammates and reportedly close friends.
However, Coleen has revealed she never actually felt that close to Jamie Vardy’s wife – even calling the friendship ‘unnatural’.
The TV personality may be a high profile figure but in reality has a small circle of friends, many of whom she has known for years and keep out of the spotlight.
She told The Times: ‘I can tell when someone is trying to force a friendship because of your status. I’m very savvy about that.
‘And I felt like the friendship Rebekah was trying to put on me was unnatural.’
The crux of the case, which is set to be the focus of a new Disney+ documentary, came as Coleen realised her stories were being leaked, so lay a trap.
In her now famous post, she unveiled her investigation and wrote: ‘It’s … Rebekah Vardy’s account.’
A defamation case was brought to court, with the onus on Coleen’s team to prove it was Rebekah’s account leaking the information.
After a whirlwind trial, the court ruled against Rebekah and ordered her to pay 90 per cent of Coleen’s costs on top of her own fees.
While the friendship wasn’t a ‘natural’ closeness before this incident, Coleen was still surprised to discover personal information from a fellow WAG’s account would be shared in that way.
She continued: ‘Obviously Rebekah has lived my life to a degree, in the public eye. So I never thought someone would do that to someone else.
‘But I knew she enjoyed the limelight and would do things only to be in the public eye. And the more I knew, the more I wasn’t surprised.’
The case has left a coldness between the former England teammates, as the mum of four asked her husband not to contact Jamie during the trial.
Since then there has been ‘no contact’ she confirmed – laughing when asked if Rebekah had reached out to her.
Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story airs on October 18 on Disney Plus.
