'Shohei Ohtani: Beyond the Dream' Documentary To Release on Disney+
A new sports documentary is set to make its way to Disney+ and this time Japanese baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani is at the center of it.
The Hollywood Reporter calls Shoehi Ohtani a “once-in-10-generations baseball phenom.” Fans will be able to get an in-depth and intimate look at the life and career of the player in the new documentary, Shohei Ohtani: Beyond the Dream. Ohtani, the famed Los Angeles Angels ace pitcher and homerun slugger is the star of the doc, directed and edited by Toru Tokikawa. The documentary is slated to include Ohtani’s first in-depth interview about how he was brought up, his background and how he was nurtured to push his unique talents to the MLB.
Admirers and fans alike have noted that Ohtani is arguably the most impressive two-way baseball player since Babe Ruth. A legend in the making, the feature also includes interviews and appearances by players, managers, coaches, mentors and baseball heroes that have influenced him. Ohtani said in a statement shared by Disney, “I’m thankful for the opportunity to share my journey in this documentary. Hearing the stories shared by my childhood heroes has been truly inspiring. I hope this documentary stands as a testament to the importance of resilience, passion, and self-belief in the pursuit of excellence.”
Beyond the Dream provides an introspective look at Ohtani’s career and the humble beginnings from when he lived in rural Japan to his journey to becoming one of the greatest two-way players this generation has seen. The film follows Ohtani’s professional start with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters and transitioning to the MLB with the Los Angeles Angels. The documentary also follows his injury-hampered 2019 and 2020 that left critics skeptic of his return. In stats, Ohtani was the first player in MLB history with over 10 home runs and 20-plus stolen bases as a hitter, and more than 100 strikeouts and 10-plus pitching appearances, winning the American Leagueโs most valuable player trophy. Currently, Ohtani is recovering from a torn UCL in his throwing arm, making him unable to pitch in the 2024 season.
Beyond the Dream hits Disney+ on November 17.
