This Morning left viewers feeling uneasy during Friday’s episode with the reporting of the tragic Croydon stabbing followed by the Sycamore Gap tree.

Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary, as usual, discussed the latest headlines with Gyles Brandreth and Vanessa Feltz, with guest Julia Bradbury on video link.

The segment began talking about the death of 15-year-old schoolgirl Elianne Andam, who was fatally stabbed, allegedly while trying to protect a friend from her knife-wielding ex-boyfriend.

She is said to have tried to stop the teenager attacking her pal after he attempted to give her flowers and a love note on the bus.

Addressing the horrific incident, Gyles described it as ‘heartbreaking.’

‘This rise of knife crime is so distressing, but here we are reminded of how it has hurt, well, broken this family,’ he said.

He added that it is ‘so cruel’, while Vanessa described it as an ‘agonising story’.

As they concluded that conversation, Dermot and Alison moved on to talk about the chopping down of the iconic Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland.

A teenager is currently in custody following the loss of the tree, which became famous when it appeared in Kevin Costner’s 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.

Dermot said: ‘It seems kind of glib to move on to this story, but it’s dominating the news so I guess we should talk about it.

‘In a completely different way, it’s a sad story.

‘A tree has been cut down, a 300-year-old tree…’

TV star Julia then joined on video, a self-professed ‘tree hugger’ who expressed her sadness over what had happened.

She said: ‘I know that there’s a lot of bad news around today, but this is absolutely a tragedy for the area, for the country, and just for the world it is such a sad indication of where we’ve come to.’

‘I’m a tree hugger, I’m a tree lover, and I care passionately that we are all very, very disconnected from nature now.’

Reacting to the transition, some were furious at the show for ‘comparing’ the stabbing to the tree.

‘So a 16 year old chopped down a tree and #ThisMorning are comparing it to a stabbing?’, one person tweeted.

‘I think they maybe should have bridged those two news items better’, penned another.

‘You cant go from talking about a teenager being killed by another teenager, to then calling the cut down of a tree a great tragedy.’

‘Is it me or did this morning just compare the killing of Elianne and the cut down of a tree!?!?’, another asked.

In the latest developments, a 17-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder Elianne.

The teenager, who cannot be named, was remanded in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Friday ahead of a hearing at the Old Bailey on October 3.

With the Sycamore Gap, a 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with chopping down the landmark and is assisting officers with their inquiries.

ITV has been contacted for comment.
