Boat Story viewers brand dark comedy about cocaine smuggling ‘the best thing the BBC has done in years’ – and compare the ‘twisted’ and violent plot to Tarantino films

The BBC’s latest thriller Boat Story has been branded ‘incredible’ and a ‘masterpiece’ by fans.

The violent thriller,  laced with black humour, which debuted last night,  centres on two strangers who come across a hoard of drugs in a boat that’s washed ashore while out walking their dogs.

It’s the latest series from Harry and Jack Williams, the brothers who created The Missing and its spin-off Baptiste, and were also behind last year’s most-watched drama The Tourist. 

While the first episode aired last night on BBC1, the whole series dropped on BBC iPlayer, with some fans saying they ‘watched the whole show’ in one go and compared it to Quentin Tarantino films.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, fans compared the show to a Hollywood blockbuster, calling it the best thing the BBC has made in years adding they were also shocked by the level of violence.

‘Boat Story’s first episode was excellent. Dark, funny, turn-the-page compelling,’ said one viewer. 

The show tells the story of how Samuel (Peep Show’s Paterson Joseph) convinces Janet (Breeders’ Daisy Haggard) they should steal the drugs, sell them and split the proceeds.

It would ease gambling addict Samuel’s financial problems and present Janet with something that feels like good fortune after a run of terrible luck.

Yet their split-second decision upends their lives and soon their bucolic neighbourhood is being stalked by a sadistic drug lord, his machine gun-wielding gangsters and other murderous villains who are desperate to find out where the stash has gone.

And they’ll all gleefully dispatch anyone they think might be involved.

The idea for this wild tale sprang from real-life incidents such as the drugs recently found on Isle of Wight beaches and the running aground of the SS Politician that inspired the 1949 comedy classic Whisky Galore!.

‘Binge watched Boat Story on BBC iplayer. If it doesn’t win every BAFTA going, something’s wrong. 10/10.

‘Just watched the first episode. Loved it! Very dark, Guy Ritchie-esque. #boatstory 

Many hailed star Daisy Haggard as ‘well on her way to national treasure’ status, branding her acting ‘superb’ and ‘brilliant’.

Daisy herself said the drama is ‘thrilling, stressful, bold, imaginative, surprising, bloody, playful, and very funny’.

Others compared the show to Hollywood thrillers saying it was both ‘Ritchie-esque’ and ‘like a Tarantino’.

‘I enjoyed #BoatStory but man alive it was maybe the most violent thing I’ve ever seen on BBC1,’ said one.

‘How good was this for a Sunday Nights TV was wide awake after it,’ added another.

‘Probably the most violent, shocking thing I have ever seen on television,’ said a third. 

‘Quirky and very, very dark, think Fargo crossed with The League of Gentleman/Inside number 9. I love it! Excellent cast,’ said another.
