Households can apply for new Winter Fuel Payment worth up to £600 from this week

The Winter Fuel Payment will help millions of Brit households receive up to £600 on their bills. State pensioners who need to submit a claim can put in their application from this week.

Most people receive the money automatically but there are some Brits who need to physically apply for it. The Winter Fuel Payment is worth up to £300, depending on circumstances.

The government then tops this up with an extra £300 pensioner cost of living payment, meaning some households could get up to £600 this winter. More than 11.4million payments were made last year.

It's worth checking to see if you're eligible for the payment, but if you're born on or before September 25, 1957, it's likely you are. You also need to have lived in the UK for at least one day between September 18-24, 2023.

The qualifying period changes every year but is normally the week beginning from the third Monday in September. Most people who receive the following benefits will get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically:

  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

  • Incapacity Benefit

  • Industrial Death Benefit

You should receive a letter in October or November telling you if you're eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment, unless you need to claim. Most people normally receive the money in November or December.
