A mom’s ambition to dress her kids in a terrifying costume turned into a bloody disaster.

Jessica Jovel’s twins are now old enough to choose their own costumes, but in a TikTok video the mom couldn’t help but look back on a time when her twin girls were infants – and she decided to dress them up as little mummies.

The mom-of-three shared her horror in a resurfaced video, realizing after she dressed her baby girls, Arla and Ayla, up in their costume, they didn’t so much resemble an undead human – but more so tiny little tampons. 

‘It did not turn out as we expected,’ she admitted in the caption. ‘I was terrified.’

Jessica shared some snaps in the clip, showing her then-newborn babies swaddled in blankets and white gauze – which had smudged with ‘blood.’

TikTok users were in hysterics over the mishap – many commenting they thought the mom had purposely dressed them up as tampons.

‘They’re adorable but I thought you dressed them up as tampons,’ one laughed.

‘I thought they were little tampons,’ another agreed.

‘I’ve never seen any mummies with blood on them,’ a third person commented. ‘They look like used gauze.’

‘Aww what cute bloody bandaids,’ someone else chimed in.

While tampons may not be a popular costume, there are plenty of fun outfits to choose from for Halloween 2023 – although it does come with a price.

Halloween just got a little more scary this year with the cost of the holiday expected to reach an all-time high, as per the National Retail Federation’s annual survey.

Festivities across the US is expected to total about $12.2 billion in 2023, with more Americans than ever expected to reach into their wallets and spend a record amount of money over the  spooky season.

The survey found that a huge 73 per cent of respondents will participate in Halloween-related activities this year, up from 69 per cent in 2022.

The money spent on costumes for adults, children and pets have reached an all-time high of $4.1 billion – which is nearly a billion dollars more than pre-pandemic costume spending.

Individually spending is also up, with consumers planning on spending a record $108.24 each – up from the previous record of $102.74 in 2021.

Popular chain Spirit Halloween says current movies and pop-culture moments help determine the most popular costumes. 

Barbie, which was the highest-grossing movie of 2023, will likely be a very popular costume this year, with about 1.8 billion people predicted to dress up as one of the iconic dolls.

‘Social media continues to grow as a source of costume inspiration for younger consumers, as more people under 25 are turning to TikTok, Pinterest and Instagram for ideas,’ Prosper Insights & Analytics’s executive vice president of strategy Phil Rist said.
