Matthew Perry was found underwater in his hot tub by his assistant, who lifted his head to get air in his lungs, first responders have claimed.
The Los Angeles Fire Department released a statement that the actor was found underwater in his jacuzzi but was "repositioned" by his assistant when they arrived at his Pacific Palisades home on Saturday (October 28). Despite their best efforts, a spokesperson for the LAFD told the Los Angeles Times that the Friends star was already deceased upon arrival.
They told the publication: "An adult male patient was deceased prior to first response arrival. The patient was found by a bystander who had re-positioned the victim where the head was out of water.
"Firefighters pulled the victim out of the jacuzzi and did a quick medical assessment to find he was deceased." The reported bystander is understood to be Matthew's assistant, who is thought to have been the one who found him, according to reports.
Reports claim the 54-year-old actor played Pickleball for two hours before coming home and sending his assistant out on an errand. It is understood that when they returned they found him underwater and called 911.
After the Hollywood legend was discovered underwater, it appears as though the actor appeared to have drowned however no official cause of death has been released. An initial autopsy was "deferred" while the state performs a toxicology report.
Investigators have since said they believed there was no foul play involved in his death when no illegal drugs were found at the scene. Matthew was best known for his iconic role as Chandler Bing on the beloved sitcom, Friends.
The actor has been candid about his struggles with alcoholism and opioid addiction throughout his life. He most recently discussed his battled in his book, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, which hit the shelves last year.
So far, his co-stars Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow or Matt LeBlanc have shared any tribute to the late actor online. It has been reported that the cast are working on a joint statement between the five of them.
Sources have since claimed that the cast is "reeling" about the tragic loss as if they "lost a brother". Other actors who worked on the show have shared their heartbreak online, including Maggie Wheeler, who played Chandler's on-again, off-again girlfriend Janice throughout the series.
She wrote: "What a loss. The world will miss you Matthew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared."
It comes after reports suggested the actor was "sad and depressed" after several failed relationships. A source close to him said: "Matthew always dreamed of having the perfect family. He wanted a wife, and at least a couple of kids. And he said he wouldn't even mind marrying a woman who already had kids."
