The Crown showed its respects in the closing credits of a season six episode, but who was Shay Leonard and what was his involvement in the drama?

Netflix subscribers are saying goodbye to the royal series as the streamer released its final six episodes today, Thursday, December 14.

Among the emotional scenes with Prince William (played by Ed McVey) and the Queen (Imelda Staunton) celebrating her Golden Jubilee, there was another memorable moment.

In the closing credits of season six, episode six, entitled Ruritania, a title card pops up reading “In Memoriam of Shay Leonard 1970-12023”.

Naturally, fans are curious to know all there is about Shay Leonard and why the creators of The Crown wanted to pay tribute.

Who was Shay Leonard? 

Shay Leonard was an art director and TV and film producer who worked on projects like Sherlock Holmes, Hot Fuzz, The Ghost and Vampire Academy.

The 54-year-old had worked with props for various Netflix shows including Anatomy of a Scandal as well as The Crown where he remained for three years from 2017 to 2020.

Away from his work, Shay was an “amazing father” to his son Liam and a “gorgeous husband” of a woman called Ekin.

It isn’t known exactly what happened but Shay was ill for around six months prior to his death as noted by an obituary.

The tribute said he would be “greatly missed” and thanked his friends and family for their support during his time of ill health.

The obituary reads: “To those who helped in any way, your contribution made our loss more bearable.

“Please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude.”

Those who knew Shay also wrote tributes, describing him as a “beautiful person”, “kind, funny and caring” and “a wonderful human being” who “will be missed by all”.

Going by the dates listed on his IMDb page, Shay worked on the first four seasons so didn’t play a part in the final two outings.

It has already been confirmed that The Crown will not be back for another series on Netflix, with creator Peter Morgan rounding off the show after seven years.

This series highlights some of the happier times in the royals’ lives, including the meeting of Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) and King Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla’s (Olivia Williams) wedding.
